Newlyweds Raja (29) and Sonam Raghuvanshi (25), both from Indore, embarked on a dreamy honeymoon to Meghalaya. They reached the iconic living root bridge in Nongriat on May 22 and appeared happy and well during a local trek. But their story took a chilling twist the next day.
A Last Contact and Disappearing Act
On May 23, around 1:43 PM, Sonam made her final phone call to her mother. Their rented scooter was later found abandoned near the Shillong–Sohra road, suggesting they were heading back from Nongriat. After this, all communication went dark.
Witnesses Recall Strange Encounters
Local guides and villagers reported seeing the couple near Wei Sawdong Falls on the same day, walking with three unidentified men. This sighting sparked concerns that they were not alone during their final hours.
Grim Discovery in the Gorge
On June 2, a drone from the NDRF located Raja’s decomposed body at the base of a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls. Authorities recovered key evidence nearby: a woman’s shirt, a blister pack, part of a mobile screen, and a smartwatch.
A blood-stained raincoat—believed to belong to Raja—was found in Mawkma village, prompting police to suspect foul play.
Investigation Takes a Serious Turn
Meghalaya Police have classified Raja’s death as a suspected homicide and formed a Special Investigation Team. Key forensic efforts include weapon recovery and evidence tracing, while the couple’s families are demanding a CBI investigation, citing missing jewelry and their concern for Sonam’s safety. She remains unlocated.
Families Demand Answers and a Wider Probe
Raja’s brother has raised alarms over missing gold items, suggesting possible robbery and murder. Sonam’s family firmly believes she might still be alive, possibly kidnapped, and is urging authorities to intensify search efforts.
What Lies Ahead
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, has pledged full support to the SIT’s inquiry. With each daylight rescue attempt hampered by treacherous terrain and weather conditions near the falls, hopes remain alive that Sonam will be found and answers revealed.
